Day twenty four: some more plans

Two posts in one day, I’m spoiling you. Or not.

With the relative success of the first set of very rough plans I was in the right frame of mind to carry on and fix things up a bit. The good news is I put some doors in, so we can now get in and out – yay! The bad news is the house footprint has increased even further, so it’s now officially mahoosive.

Same sort of drill as earlier, let’s start with the ground floor (click for bigger):

Subtle changes, nothing huge. Truth is, I was fiddling with these boxes until nearly 4am, then crashed in a heap, and carried on this afternoon. I’ve pushed the porch out a little further, made Emma’s plant dungeon a more sensible size, and not much else (aside from doors, of course).

And now the first floor (click for bigger version):

Far more changes here. The kitchen moved, bedrooms moved, balcony added, lots of stuff changed. Again, not finished, still very definitely a work-in-progress, but crucially something I’m broadly happy with.

Have some pretty external renders. First up, aerial view from SSW-ish:

…and from NNE-ish:

Let’s take the roof off:

The landing cutout is something I rather like, and if it’s possible to achieve what I want without massive, expensive girders then I’m all in favour of it.

Next task: add some windows, more faffing around with boxes and – in the real world – look at non-PVC guttering. I’ve set myself a tall order of building a PVC-free house, and I don’t know attainable this is. Time will tell, no doubt.

As ever, your comments are welcome – bear in mind I know of ~30 small things that need to be done to the above diagrams, so don’t be disheartened if I answer ‘thanks, I know’ – that just means great minds think alike. Or something.

Comments on Day twenty four: some more plans

Wow.. fantastic design so far.

Just a couple of comments – and I’m completely ready for the “yeah I know” :)

- The second and third bedrooms seem a little cramped widthwise – I’d be interested to know what layout you’re planning for ‘em

- The second and third bedrooms don’t seem to have bath/toilet facilities.. would they share the granny annex bath downstairs?

Lookin’ good so far – a dream home!

Cheers
james

Hey James – thanks for you comments, both very valid.

Additional beds were almost an afterthought, and I’m not 100% happy with them as they stand. Same goes for the (lack of) bathroom facilities – it needs a rethink.

Practical stuff to one side, I’m sure there’s an issue from a Feng Shui perspective related to stairs directly aligned with the front door. Something about all the good stuff from upstairs tumbling down and out the door. Don’t know if that’s the kind of element you want to introduce, but thought I’d mention it.

- James beat me to it with the upstairs bath. I suppose if you don’t want to lose space from other rooms, you could always have a second, landing-side door into the existing bathroom. Depends on how often you’d have guests staying, I suppose.

- Also, a downstairs toilet for during the work day is good, saves you clambering up the stairs and into the living space all the time. Improves separation (voice of experience).

- A door to the kitchen direct off the landing is a must, I think. Gets annoying having to manoeuvre around and through things to get to where you want to go.

Hey Neil – valid points, thanks. I think the next stage is to focus on the spare beds and not just have them as a ‘nice to have’, they’re the sticking point in my head at the moment.

Good point about the kitchen door – obvious now you mention it :)
